Kay Burley taken off air until 2021 after 'infuriating Sky News' by breaking lockdown rules

Sky News presenter Kay Burley has reportedly been taken off air until 2021 after breaking lockdown rules on her 60th birthday bash.

Kay apologised after "inadvertently breaking the rules" when she hosted a party and used the toilet in a different restuarant.

She was replaced on her show today by Sarah Hewson, but it's now been reported she will not be returning to the show until 2021.

Kay issued an apology on Twitter on Monday evening after admitting that a call of nature saw her head into a restaurant after visiting a "Covid compliant" eatery.

She called it an "error of judgement" and expressed her embarrassment at the situation, though it is unclear what action was the the breach, the party or the toilet use.

She is now facing an internal investigation by Sky.

The inquiry will also investigate the guests she had with her that also work for the broadcaster, which reportedly included Beth Rigby, Inzamam Rashid and Sam Washington.

A source told The Sun: "The Sky News bosses were absolutely furious at Kay.

"She should know better and they told her as such. They’ve told her she’s off-air for the foreseeable. It looks like it will be 2021 before she’s back.

"The others involved have also been warned about their behaviour. Beth, Inzy and Sam have all had tickings off too but none more so than Kay."

MirrorOnline has contacted Sky News for comment.

Kay tweeted on Monday: "Evening everyone I want to apologise to you all for an error of judgment.

"On Saturday night I was enjoying my 60th birthday at a Covid compliant restaurant.

"I am embarrassed to say that later in the evening I inadvertently broke the rules."

In a second tweet, she continued: "I had been waiting for a taxi at 11 pm to get home.

"Desperate for the loo I briefly popped into another restaurant to spend a penny. I can only apologise."

Kay is understood to have blamed the situation on misunderstandings in planning and organising the event.

A spokesperson for Sky told the BBC: "We place the highest importance on complying with the government guidelines on Covid, and we expect all our people to comply.

"We were disappointed to learn that a small number of Sky News staff may have engaged in activity that breached the guidelines.

"Although this took place at a social event in personal time, we expect all our people to follow the rules that are in place for everyone."

Kay has since tweeted that she was due to travel to Africa on Friday anyway, writing: "Lovely people, whatever else you read be safe in the knowledge I was always heading to my beloved Africa on Friday to sit with lions.

"They kill for food not sport."
