Kay Burley planning trip to Africa after Sky News takes her off air until 2021

Kay Burley is planning a trip to Africa after it was revealed that Sky News has taken her off air until the new year after she broke lockdown rules.

She made a cryptic post about lions "killing for food and not sport" when she shared the news about her trip on Twitter last night.

It comes after she apologised for "inadvertently breaking the rules" when she hosted a party and used the toilet in a different restuarant.

On Tuesday evening, Kay tweeted: "Lovely people, whatever else you read be safe in the knowledge I was always heading to my beloved Africa on Friday to sit with lions.

"They kill for food not sport."

During her 60th birthday celebrations, Kay and nine others partied at Century Club in Soho, London, breaking the rule of six.

A group then reportedly carried onto a private restaurant, Folie, before four went back to Kay’s West London home.

After the news emerged, Kay was replaced on her show by Sarah Hewson and she will reportedly not return until 2021.

Kay issued an apology on Twitter on Monday after admitting that a call of nature saw her head into a restaurant after visiting a "Covid compliant" eatery.

She tweeted: "I want to apologise to you all for an error of judgment.

"On Saturday night I was enjoying my 60th birthday at a Covid compliant restaurant. I am embarrassed to say that later in the evening I inadvertently broke the rules. I had been waiting for a taxi at 11pm to get home.

"Desperate for the loo I briefly popped into another restaurant to spend a penny. I can only apologise."

Kay is now facing an internal investigation by Sky.

The inquiry will also investigate the guests she had with her that also work for the broadcaster, which reportedly included Beth Rigby, Inzamam Rashid and Sam Washington.

A source told The Sun: "The Sky News bosses were absolutely furious at Kay.

"She should know better and they told her as such. They've told her she's off-air for the foreseeable. It looks like it will be 2021 before she's back.

"The others involved have also been warned about their behaviour. Beth, Inzy and Sam have all had tickings off too but none more so than Kay."

Kay reportedly blamed the situation on misunderstandings in planning and organising the event.

A spokesperson for Sky told the BBC: "We place the highest importance on complying with the government guidelines on Covid, and we expect all our people to comply.

"We were disappointed to learn that a small number of Sky News staff may have engaged in activity that breached the guidelines.

"Although this took place at a social event in personal time, we expect all our people to follow the rules that are in place for everyone."
