Kay Burley apologises for colleagues dragged into party row and vows to continue career

Kay Burley has written a lengthy apology on Twitter following the news she has been suspended from Sky News for six months after breaching lockdown rules at her 60th birthday party.

The presenter hosted a bash at a restaurant and says she thought she was being Covid compliant.

Political editor Beth Rigby and correspondent Inzamam Rashid, who were both present at the party, have also agreed to come off air for three months.

Kay admitted she feels guilty that her co workers were dragged into the row and said she looks forward to returning in the new year.

She wrote: "I have agreed with Sky News to step back from my broadcasting role for a period of reflection.

"It's clear to me that we are all in the fight against Covid 19 and that we all have a duty to stick firmly by the rules.

"It doesn't matter that I thought I was Covid-compliant on a recent social event. The fact is I was wrong, I made a big mistake, and I am sorry."

"Some dear friends and colleagues - some of the most talented and committed professionals in our business - have been pulled into this episode and I regret this enormously.

"I was one of the founding presenters on Sky News. No one is prouder of our channel's reputation, the professionals on our team, and the impact we make.

"I very much look forward to being able to continue my 32 year career with Sky when I return."

Kay reportedly invited nine of her friends out for dinner in Soho - across two tables - which would potentially break the rule of six.

She issued an apology on Twitter on Monday evening after admitting that a call of nature saw her head into a restaurant after visiting a "Covid compliant" eatery.

She called it an "error of judgement" and expressed her embarrassment at the situation, though it is unclear what action was the the breach, the party or the toilet use.
