Katy Perry watching Taylor Swift's success through gritted teeth after chart flops

Katy Perry and Taylor Swift fans never thought they’d see peace between the ladies – so they were delighted when the pop singers made up after their five-year fall-out.

Katy even starred in Taylor’s video to the single You Need To Calm Down.

But they may have gotten comfortable a little too soon. For they are set to once again do battle – this time in the charts, and there may be more Bad Blood spilled.

Katy released her latest single, Small Talk, last week, which debuted at number eight to not much fanfare.

Disappointingly, after just nine days in the US charts, it has slipped down to number 78.

Now she faces seeing her one-time most fierce rival steal her music thunder with the release of Taylor’s eagerly awaited seventh studio album’s title track, Lover.

It precedes the release of the album itself which is out next week.

The song is an old-school romantic ballad with a 60s’ vibe and opens with: “We can leave the Christmas lights up ’till January. This is our place, we made the rules.”

A music insider says: “Katy used to dominate the music charts, but her last album Witness famously flopped and a previous track, Never Really Over, which was promoted as her comeback solo, just fizzled out.

"Taylor seems to have had a resurgence in popularity getting the Vogue September issue cover and is breaking more records.”

But Katy’s career is hardly in crisis five albums in, and she still has a huge fanbase of Katycats.

However, while she and Taylor kissed and made up, she is going to be watching Taylor’s turn in the spotlight with interest, and her success through gritted teeth.

Maybe a duet is what’s really needed here.
