Katy Perry sparks huge row by saying she's going to turn dog Nugget vegan

Katy Perry has provoked a huge debate after saying she will turn her dog vegan.

The I Kissed A Girl singer, 36, took to her Twitter account on Saturday night to announce her plans to go plant-based, and revealed that her pooch Nugget has been slowly turning vegan with her.

She tweeted: "I'm about 95% ready to be 100% VEGAN... my dog Nugget has been joining me on this journey for the past 4 monthz.

"Pray for us ok."

But her announcement proved be divisive, with many of her Twitter followers saying it's animal cruelty to not feed a dog meat.

One tweeted: "I hope Nugget has only been joining you for emotional support! Dogs shouldn't be vegan, so please continue providing their necessary requirements! Also I mean being imperfectly vegan is fine like just do your best out there and don't beat yourself up for any mistakes."

"Dogs can't go vegan they're carnivore," another posted, alongside a sad face emoji.

A third said: "Katy I love you but forcing your dog to be vegan is abuse I don’t care what anyone says."

Another agreed: "Please say that this doesn't mean your dog is vegan. That's really unhealthy for him if he is."

It's generally not advised to give your pet a vegan diet.

Daniella Dos Santos, the president of the British Veterinary Association (BVA) told the BBC : "In the UK, under the Animal Welfare Act the owner has the obligation to feed the animal an appropriate diet.

"If your personal belief system means you don't want to eat any animal protein, that's fine, but that diet is not designed to meet the welfare standards of your pet."

She added: "It is theoretically possible to feed a dog a vegetarian diet, but it's much easier to get it wrong than to get it right.

"You would have to do it under the supervision of a veterinary-trained nutritionist."

The Mirror has contacted Katy Perry's rep for comment.
