Katy Perry Says The Space Flight Backlash Has Left Her Feeling Like A ‘Human Piñata’

Katy Perry has responded after enduring a wave of backlash for her Blue Origin space flight, saying the criticism has left her feeling like a “human piñata”.

ICYMI, the pop star basically cured all of the world’s ills earlier this month when she boarded an all-female (girl power!) flight to space at the behest of Blue Origin and Amazon owner, Jeff Bezos.

The extremely expensive spectacle, which lasted all of 11 minutes and spawned countless memes, was immediately panned as out of touch, and now Perry has responded to the Milky Way-sized controversy.

“Please know I am ok,” the singer commented on a post shared by a fan page.

“I have done a lot [of] work around knowing who I am, what is real and what is important to me.”

Perry went on to call out the internet, saying it “[tried] to make me a human piñata”, on top of the human hamburger and human chandelier she was at the 2019 Met Gala.

“I take it with grace and send them love”, Perry added of the critics, saying social media “is very much so a dumping ground for unhinged and unhealed”.

Perry then quoted her therapist (real), before expressing gratitude to the fans who’ve attended her just-launched Lifetimes tour, which has yet to book a date in space (Bezos, do your thing).

Fans weren’t the only ones to criticise the Blue Origin flight — which also counted Oprah’s bestie Gayle King as a passenger — with Emily Ratajkowski calling it “end-time shit” and Olivia Wilde writing that a “billion dollars bought some good memes, I guess”.

Lily Allen, meanwhile, slammed the spectacle because “we’re on the brink of recession”, but later apologised and said it was “completely unnecessary to pile on” Perry.

Given the avalanche of bad press that has followed her since the release of her latest album 143 — including a rumoured beef with the AFL, of all things — perhaps space was the only way for Perry to escape the noise.

It was only for 11 minutes, which is far longer than I listened to 143.
