Katy Perry's beloved Las Vegas Strip show closes

It has been a difficult time for Las Vegas Strip shows. A number of big-name production shows including one from "Hamilton" creator Lin-Manuel Miranda and a big-budget musical based on Meat Loaf's classic "Bat Out of Hell" album, died quick expensive deaths.

The Las Vegas Strip also saw the end of the longest-running show in Strip history, "Legends In Concert," which lost its spot at Tropicana and could not find a new location. That was a very quiet end for a show that had been produced at multiple Strip properties including more than one Caesars Entertainment CZR resort casino.

Another beloved Las Vegas Strip fixture "Beatles: Love," a Cirque du Soleil production, has been extended through 2024. The show currently plays at the Mirage, which Hard Rock International purchased from past owner MGM Resorts International.

The new owner, which plans to build a Guitar Hotel on the property where the Mirage Volcano currently sits, has committed to the show using the music of the most popular rock band of all time through next year, but there's no word yet on whether it will be extended further.

"We have no plans to close the show while transitioning to new ownership," according to a "Beatles: Love" spokesperson.

Not every show ending comes as the result of a cancellation. Sometimes, a performer simply decides to move on or can't reach a deal to continue a residency.

Katy Perry's Las Vegas Strip residency ends

Katy Perry's residency at Resorts World Las Vegas has closed and neither the singer nor the resort has said why they did not continue working together. It's possible that Perry simply wanted to move on to other things as she has been performing at Resorts World since it opened in 2021.

For her last show, Perry counted Celine Dion as an audience member. Dion was originally scheduled to be the headliner at Resorts World Theater when the property opened, but she had to back out due to health reasons.

Dion has not performed in years and has largely been out of the public eye. She recently reemerged and attended a Las Vegas Knights game with her family a few days before Perry's last show.

Perry reflected on the impact of her Las Vegas Strip residency, in a recent interview on Good Morning America.

"I know how important it is to some audience members," Perry said.

The singer was also touched that people planned their vacations around her show and thanked them for spending their "hard-earned" money on tickets.

Perry ends while Lady Gaga extends

Perry and Lady Gaga are kind of the Madonna and Cyndi Lauper of their generations. Both have had huge hits, but have followed similar, but different paths for their careers.

Gaga had a successful Strip Residency, "Enigma + Jazz & Piano," which included her biggest hits and songs from the Great American Songbook, that ran from Dec. 28, 2018, through May 1, 2022, at Dolby Live's predecessor the Park Theater at the Park MGM.

A new version of that show returned to Dolby Live in August and ran through October. That show, simply titled "Jazz & Piano," has been extended, which the singer shared during a Sept. 7 performance.

"We’re gonna make a contract. Everybody on this stage will be here forever, we’ll do it. I’m not kidding. I make a lot of jokes on this stage. This is not one of them,” Lady Gaga said.

The show, which features stripped-down versions of Gaga's hits, is expected to return in Spring 2024. Specific dates and contract terms have not been released.
