Katy Perry loses trademark case against Australian fashion designer Katie Perry

Katy Perry has lost a trademark case against an Australian fashion designer called Katie Perry.

The chart-topping singer, 38, was sued by Katie Taylor, who sells clothes under her birth name Katie Perry.

On Friday (28 April), a judge agreed that clothing sold for the California Gurls singer's 2014 Australian tour did breach Katie's trademark.

"This is a tale of two women, two teenage dreams and one name," Justice Brigitte Markovic wrote in her ruling.

The judge said the American pop star, born Katheryn Hudson, used the Katy Perry name in "good faith" and does not owe any personal compensation to the designer.

However, Katy's company Kitty Purry must pay damages, of which will be decided next month.

Designer Katie started selling clothes under the brand name Katie Perry back in 2007.

She registered the name as a trademark in Australia the following year.

Katy, who had her breakthrough hits in 2008, was said to have infringed the trademark by promoting a jacket advertising her album Roar.

She also broke the trademark by selling "Cozy Little Christmas" hoodies, T-shirts, sweatpants and scarves, on social media.

However, the judge rejected further claims relating to sales in certain stores and websites, and merchandise for a 2018 tour.

Justice Markovic also dismissed a bid by the pop star to cancel the Katie Perry trademark.

Designer Katie described the outcome as a victory in a "David and Goliath" case.

"Not only have I fought [for] myself, but I fought for small businesses in this country, many of them started by women, who can find themselves up against overseas entities who have much more financial power than we do," she wrote on her website.

The Firework singer is set to put on a spectacular show when she takes part in the musical extravaganza on May 7 at King Charles' Coronation Concert.

Speaking ahead of the big bash, Katy – who shares daughter Daisy Dove with British actor Orlando Bloom – says she is is "so grateful" for the opportunity and the fact she has the songs to support being asked to perform at prestigious events.

Others involved in the show include her American Idol co-judge Lionel Richie, who was the first global ambassador of the Prince's Trust – a charity which was founded by the King.

Italian opera star Andrea Bocelli will also perform at the event which is also set to feature Bette Midler.

Katy's inclusion came as a surprise to some, but it comes a few years after she was appointed as an ambassador of the British Asian Trust.

She said: "I’m an ambassador to one of his foundations for the British Asian trust, which primarily focuses on ending child trafficking, which is a huge issue of our time that people don’t talk enough about, and it just aligned with all my values."

The charity was initially founded by King Charles III and Katy joined in 2020.
