Pop star Katy Perry is under investigation by Victoria Police after Australian actor and model Ruby Rose alleged she sexually assaulted her at a Melbourne nightclub in 2010.
Rose, known for her role in Orange Is the New Black, has claimed Perry sexually assaulted her at CBD venue Spice Market while they were out together in Melbourne.
Victoria Police confirmed to PEDESTRIAN.TV that detectives from the Melbourne Sexual Offences and Child Abuse Investigation Team (SOCIT) are investigating a historical sexual assault reported to have occurred at a licensed premises in the city in 2010.
“Police have been told the incident occurred at a licensed premises in Melbourne’s CBD,” police said in a statement.
“As the investigation remains ongoing, it would be inappropriate to comment further at this stage.”
Rose first shared the allegation publicly in a detailed series of posts on Threads on April 13, responding to coverage of Perry’s reaction to Justin Bieber’s headline set at Coachella.
“Katy Perry [allegedly] sexual assaulted me at spice market nightclub in Melbourne. Who gives a s**t what she thinks,” she wrote, going on to say she had previously reframed the incident as a “funny little drunk story” despite feeling traumatised. She also alleged that Perry later helped her obtain a US visa, which contributed to her decision to stay quiet for years.
In a follow-up post on Tuesday night, Rose told followers she had “finalised all of my reports” with police and would not be commenting further while the investigation continues.
“It’s going to look like I am ignoring everything from supportive messages, to other people’s experiences, but I’m not,” she wrote.
“This is a standard request from the police and in many ways, quite the relief. I can start the healing process now.”
She added, “Though I am so grateful to have made it long enough to find my voice, it just shows how much of an impact trauma and sexual assault takes. Thank you for seeing me.”
Perry has strongly denied the allegation through her team. In a statement shared with outlets including PEOPLE, her representative said: “The allegations being circulated on social media by Ruby Rose about Katy Perry are not only categorically false, they are dangerous, reckless lies”.
“Ms. Rose has a well-documented history of making serious public allegations on social media against various individuals, claims that have repeatedly been denied by those named,” the statement continued.
No charges have been laid at this stage.
