Katter in talks to free north Queensland from COVID-19 restrictions

Mount Isa MP Robbie Katter wants a north Queensland travel bubble in place before school holidays.

There has been a lot of talk about a north Queensland travel bubble in the past few days and now north-west MP Robbie Katter has weighed in saying he has spoken to someone "high up" in government and is hoping for an announcement soon.

Mr Katter said the plan outlined by Mackay Tourism chief executive Tas Webber was "pretty similar" to what he and his father, MP Bob Katter, have been speaking about for the past few weeks.

"That's probably the only definitive thing we've been calling for from the start," Robbie Katter said.

"I spoke to someone high up in government yesterday and we'll be pushing that for the rest of the week as far as we're concerned.

"Here's to hoping we'll have some announcement in the next couple of weeks about the regions because that's certainly what we've been calling for and I'll continue my discussions with the government this week."

New rules for the regions

When asked, Mr Katter said he believed the Queensland Government had been "dragging their heels" when it came to addressing regional restrictions separately to metropolitan ones.

"You can say 'oh well you can allow 20 in the pubs now' but 20 isn't too much better than 10," he said.

"Outside of that there's been really not enough attention to detail on different areas of risk to different parts of the state.

"It's been too much one-size-fits-all approach here."

School holidays deadline

Mr Katter said he hoped to see free travel within the north of Queensland before school holidays start on June 27.

"Really, there's an argument that some of those remote western towns could have higher levels of freedom than we could see in Mount Isa, Townsville, or Cairns," he said.

"It would be reasonable at this point.

"If we open this region up it would be more than reasonable and that allows us to get back into business and I think in a safe way because we've been clear for so long."
