Katie Taylor shares emotional moment when boxing ‘took a hold' of her heart

Katie Taylor has shared a photo of the moment she began her road to boxing greatness during one of her early sessions at just 11 years of age.

Taylor took to Twitter to share an emotional snap, claiming that her rise to stardom began when she was a child as the sport 'took a hold' of her heart.

The Bray boxer said: “11 years old, where boxing took a hold of my heart. The start of the journey!”

Fast forward to now, and Taylor is a five time World Champion, a six time European Champion, an Olympic Champion, and boasts the title of being the undisputed lightweight champion of the world.

Taylor was named as the RTE Sportsperson of the year in 2012, following her heroic Olympic gold performance at the London Olympics that year.

Since her rise to the pinnacle of women’s boxing, Taylor has inspired a new generation of Irish boxers, attempting to follow in the footsteps of their idol.

Taylor’s promoter, Eddie Hearn, has continuously praised and supported the Irish star, and helped to organise the upcoming super-fight with Amanda Serrano, with a behind-closed-doors showdown in the works for 4 July.

"It's the biggest fight in women's boxing. Looking at the achievements of Taylor and the growth of women's boxing? It's incredible,” said Hearn, on The Boxing Show, on Sky Sports.

"She is pound-for-pound one of the biggest superstars in the sport. I will try to make it happen on the Whyte vs Povetkin card somehow, somewhere, some way".

The pair were originally penned to collide on 4 May, but the coronavirus pandemic got in the way, with further postponements a very real possibility.

With a number of a host of super-fights awaiting Taylor in the months and years to come, the chance to cement her great legacy and become the greatest Irish and female boxer of all time is at her fingertips.
