Katie Taylor set for Amanda Serrano after retaining lightweight titles in tough win over Firuza Sharipova

Katie Taylor defender her WBA, WBC, IBF, WBO titles in a tough victory over Firuza Sharipova in Liverpool on Saturday night.

While Taylor had gone into the fight as a heavy favourite, Sharipova made it extremely difficult in a scrappy bout.

The champion may have rarely at risk of losing, though she was unable to get into much of a flow despite the challenger’s relative lack of experience.

Still, Taylor earned a unanimous 98-92, 97-92, 96-93 decision on points.

After the fight, Eddie Hearn all but confirmed a major fight between Taylor and Amanda Serrano at Madison Square Garden in April.

“The plan 100% is Amanda Serrano at Madison Square Garden. That is the biggest fight in women’s boxing. Katie’s been wanting that fight for a long time,” Hearn told DAZN.

“Amanda Serrano fights next week. They now have the contract, they’re reviewing the contract. If she gets through next week I’m almost certain you’ll see Taylor-Serrano in April at Madison Square Garden.”
