Katie Taylor has been tipped by Eddie Hearn to become the first woman boxer to hit a million dollar payday.
Hearn says Taylor is the world’s best-paid female fighter ahead of her clash at Madison Square Garden on Saturday for the undisputed lightweight world title.
Matchroom boss Hearn claims his golden girl will add to her lustre if she beats Belgian Delphine Persoon. “At the start of her professional career, Katie wasn’t on big money,” he said.
“But what she’s making now is very different. And that will go up significantly over the next six months. In the not too distant future, she’ll be making seven figures. She’s already by far the highest-paid fighter in women’s boxing history.”
The Irish WBA, IBF and WBO title-holder is a torch bearer for female fighters and her box-office appeal means her opponents get career-best purses.
Persoon is being handsomely rewarded for putting her WBC crown on the line.
Taylor took Rose Volante’s WBO title in March and the Brazilian emailed to thank her as she bought her mum a house from her purse. “She’s set her parents up for life now through that fight,” said Taylor.
