Katie Taylor's Croke Park homecoming fight reportedly unlikely to happen

Katie Taylor's rematch with Amanda Serrano is highly unlikely to happen at Croke Park, according to reports.

The Bray native beat Serrano on a points decision to retain her lightweight belts last May and is expected to face the Puerto Rican again this year.

The GAA have been in talks with Taylor's promoters Matchroom to see whether the famous venue could host the fight, but this now seems unlikely, according to BBC Northern Ireland. Other Dublin locations are now under consideration for the fight such as the Aviva Stadium and the 3Arena.

It is suspected the cost of renting and staging the fight was the big sticking point in negotiations. The Government have now stepped in to help ensure the fight takes place on Irish soil. A statement issued by Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media stated: "Ireland has a strong track record in hosting major sports events and we would be pleased to see a Katie Taylor fight taking place here, on the basis of good engagement with key local and public authorities, and we believe that such an event would be a real celebration of Katie's own achievements and of the great strides made in women's boxing in Ireland in recent years."

The 36-year old has never fought professionally in her home country. Her victorious bout against Serrano last year became the first ever women’s fight to headline Madison Square Garden. Taylor then went on to defend her title by beating Karen Elizabeth Carabajal in London in October.
