Katie Taylor reportedly offered €300,000 for Delfine Persoon rematch in Belgium

Katie Taylor has reportedly been offered €300,000 to fight Delfine Persoon in a rematch in Belgium after their controversial Madison Square Garden bout.

Taylor became the undisputed lightweight queen as she recorded a decision win over the Belgian in the early hours of Sunday morning, adding the WBC strap to her three other belts.

Persoon was not one bit happy with the verdict as several big names in the boxing world voiced their displeasure with the decision.

Even figures in Irish boxing like Carl Frampton and Kenny Egan reckon the Bruges police officer was a bit hard done by.

Talk of a rematch has already been on the lips of many in the days since the bout, and Persoon reckons that Taylor "doesn't have the guts" to accept a €300,000 offer to fight in Belgium.

But the 34-year-old is more than happy to fight across the Atlantic again, but would rather a bout in Ireland or England for the sake of fans.

"I think she doesn't have the guts to come to Belgium for the fight," Persoon told the Irish Independent.

"I am prepared to go to the United States again, but I think it would be better in England or Ireland for the supporters."

Taylor has already admitted that a rematch with Persoon is on the cards, but the Belgian police officer wants it within the next five months.

Persoon added: "It wasn't pretty to lose my belt like that. If you lose you lose, OK. But if you lose the way I did this is not correct. It is not an amateur fight, it is a pro fight and I didn't lose the pro fight. I landed more punches than she did."

It remains to be seen if that rematch will even happen, with the Bray native rumoured to be targeting fights with big names from other divisions - welterweight queen Cecilia Braekhus is among those superfights on the cards.

The 2012 Olympic gold medallist came home to a hero's welcome on Tuesday as hundreds of ecstatic fans welcomed her back to Dublin Airport

Smiling as she took pictures and chatted with supporters, she said: “To see the support is absolutely phenomenal.

“It was an absolute battle but thankfully I came out victorious.

“I’m just going to put my feet up for the next few weeks and spend time with my nephews and nieces.”
