Katie Taylor pays tribute to Irish Olympic champions Paul O'Donovan and Fintan McCarthy

Boxing star Katie Taylor took to Twitter to congratulate Irish rowers Fintan McCarthy and Paul O'Donovan on winning Olympic gold in the Men's lightweight double sculls category.

McCarthy and O'Donovan finished ahead of Germany and Italy - who finished in second and third place respectively - to claim Team Ireland's first gold medal of the Tokyo Olympics.

Having come through their heat in first place on Saturday last, McCarthy and O'Donovan then carried that form over to Wednesday's semi final where they also finished first.

That set them up perfectly for the final, where they won a dramatic race finishing half a boat length ahead of their German rivals.

And 2012 Olympic gold winner Taylor echoed the delight back at home in Ireland as she tweeted a message of congratulations to the Skibbereen rowers.

A delighted Taylor said: "Just amazing!! Our Olympic champions!!"

The win is Ireland's first ever Olympic gold medal in rowing and just the third ever in the sport.

Paul O'Donovan won silver at the 2016 Olympics in Rio alongside his brother Gary.

In between that and the gold medal win, the women's rowing team of Aifric Keogh, Eimear Lambe, Fiona Murtagh and Emily Hegarty claimed bronze this week in Tokyo.
