Katie Taylor nominated for prestigious 'fight of the year' prize

Katie taylor could land yet another big prize after she was nominated for Ring magazine's 'fight of the year' award. The particular fight up for the award is her epic victory against Amanda Serrano in Madison Square Garden in April 2022.

Her former Ireland team-mate, Michael Conlon, is also in the running for the same award although he will have less happier memories of the bout nominated. His loss in Nottingham to Leigh Woods last summer.

The Ring Magazine awards are widely considered to be amongst the most prestigious in Boxing. The 'fight of the year' award has been a mainstay since 1945 and some of Boxing's biggest names have won it including Mohammad Ali, Mike Tyson and Floyd Mayweather.

Taylor won on a majority points decision despite a troublesome fifth round. Conlon however was on the verge of securing the WBA World featherweight title when he was sensationally knocked out in round 12.

The winner of 'fight of the year' will be announced on Friday. Taylor could yet make even more history as an all-female fight has never scooped the award. Even if she misses out on this particular prize she can take comfort in the awards the fight has already delivered. These include Sport Illustrated Fight of the Year, BBC Fight of the Year, ESPN Event of the Year and Sporting News Fight of The Year. Not too shabby.

Sebastian Fundora v Erickson Lubin and Jermell Charlo v Brian Castano are the other fights nomated in the light middleweight category.

Taylor and her manager, Brian Peters recently picked up individual prizes with Katie winning Sports Illustrated 'Female Fighter of the Year' and Brian scooping the Boxing Writers' Association of America award 'Manager of the Year.'
