Katie Taylor inspiring a future generation of Irish boxers, says amateur star Michaela Walsh

Amateur boxer Michaela Walsh believes the meteoric rise of Irish sensation Katie Taylor can pave the way for a future generation of stars.

Taylor has blazed a trail for women's boxing since turning pro back in 2016.

She has already claimed the IBF, WBA and WBO lightweight titles and will look to unify the division when she takes on WBC champion Delfine Persoon on June 1.

The winner will be undisputed lightweight queen and will also collect the Ring Magazine belt.

It has been an incredible journey for the former European, World and Olympic amateur champion, and one that Belfast fighter Walsh believes can inspire more champions of the future.

"Since Katie turned pro, women's professional boxing has taken off," Walsh said.

"It is massive now and there are a lot of boxers turning pro because of Katie.

"When I eventually go professional there will be a lot of quality fighters out there, and hopefully good money to be earned.

"You put your life into boxing and you just hope when you turn pro that you make some money.

"And it's all about the big fights and big nights, and that's what I want."

She harbours hopes of one day turning pro, potentially after the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo.

"I want to turn professional after the Olympics, 100 per cent," Walsh said.

"But I am not looking too far ahead. I don't want to lose my focus on qualifying for the Olympics.

"Then after that I will set my sights on something new."
