Irish boxer Katie Taylor hinted that she may soon retire after she beat Amanda Serrano for the third time to maintain her undisputed super-lightweight world championship.
The pair met to complete their famous trilogy in front of a sold-out Madison Square Garden on Friday night. The fight lived up to its billing, built on years of intense rivalry, going the full distance before Taylor was handed the win by split decision.
Speaking after the fight, she would not commit to entering into more fights, with Serrano or another contender.
Asked whether she planned to return to the ring, she joked: “I don't know, but I won't fight Amanda Cerrano again. She punches too hard.”
Taylor, 39, has enjoyed a successful career, winning Olympic gold in 2012 and collecting a huge amount of silverware in international and continental competitions. With a career record of 24-1, she has held her super-lightweight title since 2023.
But after selling out Madison Square Garden on its first-ever all-female card and completing a legendary trilogy over Serrano, she may be ready to hang up the gloves.
The significance of the occasion was not lost on her as she lauded her opponent’s efforts on the night.
“I want to thank Amanda Serano, too. What an amazing fighter. We made history three times,” she said. “We are history makers. Amanda fought very well, it is always a very close contest between us so it can be hard to tell through each round, but I just thank God that my hand was raised and I made it 3-0.
“I was obviously planning to come in and fight smart. Thankfully, I was able to execute the game plan very well, move my feet, that is what I was trying to do. I just have a huge respect for Amanda. What a warrior, thank you so much.”
