Katie Taylor backs Kellie Harrington to win Olympic gold medal

Katie Taylor has backed Kellie Harrington to follow in her footsteps and win an Olympic gold medal.

Having already secured a silver medal in Tokyo, Harrington faces Brazil's Beatriz Ferreira in Sunday's lightweight final as she aims to emulate Taylor's gold medal win from 2012.

Posting on Twitter following the Dubliner's semi-final win over Sudaporn Seesondee of Thailand, Taylor said: "Incredible Kellie, all the way to gold!!"

Having received a bye into the last 16, Harrington defeated Italy's Rebecca Nicoli in her first Olympic bout and Algeria's Imane Khelif at the quarter-final stage before victory over Seesondee on Thursday.

Ferreira booked her place in the final with a semi-final win over Finland's Mira Potkonen, who defeated Taylor at the 2016 Games.

Speaking after her semi-final win, Harrington said: "It’s fantastic, Olympic silver medallist. That’s the stuff that people dream about.

"Many tried to get there, many don’t have what it takes to succeed because they don’t have the willpower, the determination, the focus, the dedication.

"I eat, sleep and breathe boxing. I’ve had heartbreak. I know what it is to fail and I know how hard it is to pick yourself back up after that.

"This is why I am who I am, and why I am here today – because I’m not afraid of failure.

"I know what it is. I’m Kellie Harrington. I’m myself and I make my own pathway."
