Katie Piper says she's riddled with 'panic' over people in face masks after acid attack

Katie Piper has revealed that she sometimes gets intimidated by people wearing face masks amid the pandemic.

The author and TV personality spoke about the pros and cons of the implementation of face masks in the UK to help stop the rapid spread of Covid during an appearance on Thursday’s Loose Women.

The 37-year-old star admitted that she sometimes feels herself judging and ‘discriminating’ against certain people who appear ‘intimidating’ to her while on the tube or in other public places.

Opening up about the issue, Katie admitted: “People are being discriminated against.

“And I’m happy to say that I sometimes discriminate against people. I sometimes judge people and find them intimidating in a mask.

“If people come towards me completely covered and with just tiny eyes, I do get that tummy flip and I do panic.”

Katie went on: “I do because we’ve been raised to fear somebody if they are hiding their identity.

“So, then people wrongly get discriminated against. There’s a bigger picture here and I think we have to discuss more.”

Over 13-years ago now, Katie was attacked with acid by her ex-boyfriend and an accomplice, causing major damage to her face and blindness in one eye.

Katie was put in an induced coma for 12 days and had to undergo skin graft procedures.

Since the attack, she has undergone over 400 operations to treat her burns and blindness.

Following her admission on Loose Women, viewers flocked to Twitter to throw support behind Katie.

“I love Katie Piper’s honesty about masks. They definitely can be intimidating, especially considering all that she has been through. What a wonderful lady,” gushed one viewer.

“I have to agree with Loose Women today. I find it scary being out late at night when everyone is in masks. We need to get rid,” another shared.

Meanwhile, a third viewer added: “Katie is so right, there are some pros to wearing masks but all the cons outdo the pros.”
