Katie McCabe 'speechless' after Republic of Ireland qualify for World Cup

Katie McCabe said she was left "speechless" as the Republic of Ireland women's team is set to jet off to the World Cup next year.

Last night's match saw the team winning 1-0 against Scotland at Hampden Park in Glasgow. The Tallaght woman was thrilled as she said she was "proud of the girls".

Ireland qualified for 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup finals in Australia and New Zealand for the first time ever. Speaking to RTE she said: "It doesn't feel real and I am absolutely speechless. I am numb. The weight, a subconscious weight, as we have never reached a major tournament before, so to say we have done it I don’t think it will sink in until, maybe, I am on the plane to Australia."

She continued: "We worked our socks off tonight. This one [Denise O'Sullivan] covered every inch of Hampden.

"Everybody was unbelievable - Courtney with the penalty save, Amber coming on, scoring the goal... we're going to a World Cup!"

McCabe said the win is for all the young girls looking up to them. She said she hoped this inspired a generation of Irish girls to dream.

Amber Barrett scored the winning goal for Ireland after coming on as a substitute at the 65th minute. She dedicated the goal to the "ten beautiful souls in Creeslough".

The 26-year-old wrappaed herself in teh flag of her native Donegal and was awarded Player of the Match.
