Katie McCabe rocket for Arsenal against Manchester City named WSL goal of the season

Katie McCabe's wonder strike against Manchester City in April has been voted the Women's Super League's goal of the season.

The Republic of Ireland international had another stellar season for the Gunners, helping them to a third-placed finish in the table behind winners Chelsea and Manchester United. She scored three league goals in total and registered four assists across the campaign and played a vital role in Arsenal's UWCL journey.

McCabe's strike in the 74th minute against City helped secure a narrow 2-1 win at Meadow Park. Jonas Eidevall's side had fallen behind early on courtesy of a Khadija Shaw goal, but Frida Maanum and McCabe inspired a sensational second-half comeback.

McCabe was in a protective boot a mere 72 hours before the fixture at home to City, having hobbled off the pitch at the Emirates in the 2-0 Champions League quarter-final victory against Bayern Munich. Despite appearing to have injured her left foot, she was fit and ready for the City clash and used that same foot to strike from the edge of the area and find the back of the net.

Also up for the award was Arsenal teammate Vivianne Miedema following her goal against Everton in early December. McCabe also fought off competition from Tottenham's Ashleigh Neville, Reading's Rachel Rowe, Chelsea's Erin Cuthbert, Sam Kerr and Lauren James, as well as Manchester United's Rachel Williams.

McCabe could also be set for a big summer as captain of Vera Pauw's Republic of Ireland team. Last October they defeated Scotland 1-0 at Hampden Park to book their place at the World Cup set to take place in Australia and New Zealand in a little over a month. It's the first time the Girls in Green have ever reached a major tournament and McCabe played the full 90 minutes of the qualifying fixture.
