Katie Hopkins calls plans to turn Welsh chapel into a mosque 'treachery'

Divisive right-wing columnist Katie Hopkins called plans to Plan to turn Grade II listed Snowdonia chapel into a mosque "treachery".

The former Daily Mail columnist attacked the plans for the Grade II listed Moriah Methodist chapel in Llanbedr, in Snowdonia, on Twitter.

The 44-year-old tweeted:"Grade II listed Methodist Church in Wales.

"Planning permission now in to tear out out the pews and rails.

"Before trying to change it into a mosque and Islamic retreat.

"What treachery is this?"

Her tweet, posted on Sunday night, has attracted hundreds of comments and been liked by over a thousand people.

And in true Hopkins form, her reaction to the news brought out many controversial comments from fellow right-wing supporters.

But others condemned her accusing her of not reading the article properly.

The replies included:

"This is scandalous....I'm furious Katie, what a beautiful church....why won't these people just let it be what it always has been since being built."

"At least it's not being converted to a holiday home"

"What a beautiful building, it saddens me"

"Adaptive use of historic structures is a good way to reuse them"

The centre has recently revealed more about their plans in response to enquiries from the local community.

If approved, the applicants - Jamia Almaarif, Mosque and Meditation Centre - have said they will use the building as an Islamic retreat and mosque.

The chapel was originally built in 1856 but the present structure dates back to 1913.

Designed of Owen Morris Roberts of Porthmadog , it was given a Grade II listing in 1997 and was recently been put on the market for £250,000.
