Katie Hopkins and Tommy Robinson return to X years after their Twitter accounts were banned

Katie Hopkins and Tommy Robinson have been reinstated to X, formerly Twitter, years after being permanently suspended by the social media platform.

Controversial commentator Ms Hopkins was banned in June 2020 and returned on Sunday night. She thanked the platform's owner Elon Musk, who bought Twitter for £34 billion in October 2022.

The former The Apprentice constestant and broadcaster wrote on the platform: "Thank you elonmusk And thank you to all the Twitter family who have brought Tommy & I back to X.

"Know this. You are not alone. We are many. And we are stronger together. The fight back for your freedom is on."

The 48-year-old forged a career as a commentator at several of media outlets, many of which she left after facing a severe backlash for views often focussed on immigration and Islam.

In January 2020, Ms Hopkins was temporarily locked out of her X account after anti-hate campaigners called for her to be removed from the site.

The group of campaigners including Countdown host Rachel Riley said it met with representatives from the social network, urging them to carry out a “full review” of her account.

At the time, the account was temporarily suspended for violating its hateful conduct policy and all of her tweets were deleted.

In June 2020 the social media giant, then owned by Jack Dorsey, said Ms Hopkins had been "permanently suspended".

A spokesperson said at the time: "Keeping Twitter safe is a top priority for us - abuse and hateful conduct have no place on our service and we will continue to take action when our Rules are broken.

"In this case, the account has been permanently suspended for violations of our Hateful Conduct policy."

Meanwhile Mr Robinson, 40, also thanked Musk for his reinstatement.

The founder of English Defence League had his Twitter account removed in 2018.

He wrote on the platform: "I've been censored, attacked, slandered & imprisoned for shining a light on uncomfortable truths that our government wish to hide, the public are now aware I was telling the truth. We have lots to do."

In 2022 Robinson, whose real name is Stephen Yaxley-Lennon, was fined £900 for failing to turn up at a High Court hearing to be questioned about his finances.

He had been expected at a hearing over an unpaid legal bill after he lost a libel case brought against him by a Syrian teenager in 2021.

Robinson was also handed a five-year stalking protection order in 2021 after he shouted abuse outside the home of a journalist and threatened to repeatedly return to her address.
