Kathy Griffin calls Sean Penn 'looney tunes'

Jan. 07--Comedian Kathy Griffin called Oscar winner Sean Penn "looney tunes" as she recalled an encounter with him at The Hollywood Reporter's Women in Entertainment breakfast last month.

"Sean Penn's crazy!" Griffin told Jimmy Kimmel Wednesday on "Jimmy Kimmel Live." "He's an amazing actor, but he's crazy. And you're just afraid of him, and I'm not. Look at his hair. Look at his hair!"

Griffin, who grew up in Oak Park, said she was seated at a table at the entertainment breakfast with Kris Jenner, Selma Blair, Rita Wilson, Meghan Trainor and Lena Dunham. Griffin said she approached Penn, who said "Oh, geez."

"I go, 'Penn! What's wrong with your hair?'" Griffin recalled. "It doesn't have a shape. It looks like you look like a homeless person. Fix your hair."

Griffin said Penn touched his hair and panicked. "He goes, 'What should I do?!'" recalled Griffin, who suggested he get some gel. "I go, 'Penn! Barbra Streisand's over there, Robert Redford is there. Get it together!'"

Griffin said Jenner dared her to bring Penn to their table. Penn protested but Griffin "took him over there and I go, 'Ladies! A disheveled Sean Penn!'"

Griffin said she was a "big hit" at her table. Moments later, Penn went on stage to present Melinda Gates an award.

"Sean Penn started his tribute to Melinda Gates ... by saying, 'I know I'm in a room full of women because Kathy Griffin just told me my hair looks like crap.' And it got a big hand."

Griffin, who recently co-hosted a New Year's celebration with Anderson Cooper on CNN, has performance dates scheduled into July.

"Jimmy Kimmel Live" airs weeknights on ABC at 10:35 p.m.
