Kathryn Thomas breaks down on-air as she interviews couple on surrogacy journey

A tearful Kathryn Thomas broke down on-air as a couple told her about their tragic loss of two babies.

Kathryn, who sadly suffered two miscarriages before having baby Ellie, was interviewing the couple about their surrogacy journey.

The presenter who is filling for Ray D'Arcy on RTE Radio 1 spoke to Michelle and Seamus Flanagan who opened up about their poignant story.

The couple met in 2014 and spent two years trying to conceive without any luck.

"We both wanted children and that was a given that the two of us wanted children at some point", Michelle explained.

The couple underwent tests but "nothing conclusive" showed up.

They were advised to try IVF but as they were saving for their wedding at the time, they postponed it.

In 2017, after getting married they then began IVF treatment and their baby Saoirse was born prematurely at 26 weeks by C-section after Michelle went into spontaneous labour.

Sadly, she lived just 19 days before passing away.

"Obviously when she was born, she was small, she was 800g, she was in NICU, we had her everyday, we looked after her the best we could", Monaghan native Seamus explained.

The couple underwent another four heartbreaking rounds of IVF which sadly failed.

Michelle, who is from Kildare, became pregnant after another round with baby Fionn who was born at 25 weeks last year.

He weighed just 1.8 pounds and lived only for 30 days.

They laid Fionn to rest beside his sister in their family plot.

During Fionn's birth, doctors had to perform a life-saving hysterectomy, shattering Michelle's hopes of getting pregnant again.

The couple are now hoping to have a baby by a surrogate in the Ukraine but the cost of IVF and two funerals depleted their savings.

Michelle said: "We discussed surrogacy for so long and it wasn't something we came to an easy decision.

"We're grieving for two children. Our lives have changed dramatically over three years."

But they believe their "guardian angels" are giving them strength to continue their journey.

The couple's cousin Denise decided to help by setting up a GoFundMe page with a target goal of €40,000.

Kathryn's voice could be heard cracking as she congratulated them on their bravery.

She said: "Ye are amazing, ye are incredible and like I said, it's very difficult, because I know this isn't a natural thing, particularly for you Seamus.

"I think you have no idea how much hope that you'll give to you to couples out there."

Kathryn began reading a text from a listener who said she was remembering her daughter who died nine years previously but paused as tears overcame her.

"I can't read the end of that text", she revealed tearfully.

"You did better than I did today, well done", she told the couple.
