Katherine Ryan won’t return to Bake Off until they solve their bee problem: ‘I’m a little bit scared’

Katherine Ryan has admitted she wouldn’t appear on The Great Celebrity Bake Off again because the tent is full of bees.

The comedian, 39, appeared on the Channel 4 baking competition as part of the broadcaster’s Stand Up To Cancer series in 2021.

Although she had a “wonderful experience”, the TV star admitted she wasn’t prepared for the number of insects the white tent attracted, which she said left her “a little bit scared”.

She revealed: “Something they don’t tell you is there are a lot of bees in the tent. Because it’s outside and it’s so sweet in there. There’s lots of sugar and fondant, and lots of things that attract bees.

“Every time I would prepare one of my cakes, they’d come to take a shot of it and they’d have to get all bees off. I thought that bees would be featured in the programme. Sometimes you see like one or two bees but that thing’s full of bees, that tent.

“So Bake Off… You don’t know the pressure you’re under because there’s a time constraint and it’s a competition but then also the bees are after you,” she joked to Metro.co.uk. “… it was fun, but I mean, I don’t know if I could do it again because I’m a little bit scared of the bees.”

Despite her not being a fan of the bees, Ryan joked that the show should endeavour to feature more shots of the insects in their episodes, quipping: “It’s a very environmentally friendly programme”.

Aside from bees and baking, Ryan became a mum for the third time in December, welcoming her second child with childhood sweetheart Bobby Kootstra in December.

On Instagram, Kootstra shared a picture of the star who was in a birthing pool at home, and another image of their newborn daughter sleeping.

He captioned it: “Fenna Grace Kootstra. Dec 16, at 12:05am. Mom is incredible! Proving her strength repeatedly through the relatively lengthy delivery at home. We are so blessed.”

Ryan, who has a 13-year-old daughter, also shares a son with Kootstra, born in 2021.

She previously told The Jonathan Ross Show that she was considering having a home birth with her third child as she gives birth “quickly”, having nearly had her first child in the back of a mini-cab.
