Katherine Parkinson says she will never 'get such a privilege again' to star in a play written for her

Katherine Parkinson said she will never “get such a privilege again” after appearing in the West End in a play written for her.

Laura Wade first approached the Humans star six years ago with her idea for Home, I’m Darling about a woman living like a Fifties housewife in the present day.

Parkinson, 40, said she was “astounded” to be offered the show which transferred to the West End after sell-out success in North Wales, Bath and the National Theatre.

She said: “I was like, ‘Do I have to pay you? I haven’t even done any schmoozing’.

“I don’t think I’ll ever get such a privilege again and I’m so grateful.”

Despite having opened in three different venues to critical and commercial acclaim since last year, Parkinson said she was still nervous ahead of the show.

She said: “I felt a responsibility to Laura especially because I’m such a fan of the play and I tried to take that responsibility lightly but I got very nervous tonight. I think it was because I feel like a new play in the West End is quite a rare thing.”

She said part of its success was the vintage sets and costumes and Fifties music which made it “feel like a show, not a play, in the best way”. She added: “I think the secret of a West End show is when it can appeal on lots of different levels.”
