Katherine mask mandate extended after positive COVID-19 wastewater results

A mask mandate in the town of Katherine will be extended for a further 24 hours after positive wastewater results were detected in the region.

The Northern Territory government said wastewater results for the Katherine Golf Club and the Bicentennial Road catchments on the 10th and 11th of November returned a positive result.

The mask mandate in Katherine will remain in place until 5pm on Saturday.

The NT government said there were no known COVID-19 cases or close contacts linked with the Bicentennial Road catchment, and further wastewater tests were being carried out.

"The risk of COVID-19 has not gone away and there's still work that we all need to do to keep us safe," Acting Chief Health Officer Dr Charles Pain said.

"Territorians have done an excellent job in following the health directions and doing the right thing."

"Our swift action to lockdown and lockout has kept the Territory protected from further spread of COVID-19."

People in Katherine are being urged to wear a mask when they are unable to maintain social distancing, including in shopping centres and on public transport.

Masks must also be worn at restaurants, cafes and pubs except for when eating or drinking.

People are not required to wear a mask while exercising or playing sport.

A positive wastewater result was also detected for Leanyer/Sanderson sewage treatment plant in Darwin's northern suburbs today.

But the NT government said it "may be linked to confirmed cases of COVID-19 currently in quarantine", noting that there was "no cause for alarm for Darwin residents".

A mask mandate that was in place since last Friday in Greater Darwin has now been lifted.
