Katherine Jenkins to give special VE Day performance from empty Royal Albert Hall

Katherine Jenkins will perform a live-streamed concert in front of an empty Royal Albert Hall to mark the 75th anniversary of VE Day.

The mezzo soprano will sing wartime classics including The White Cliffs of Dover and We’ll Meet Again, the latter being performed as a virtual duet with Dame Vera Lynn.

The 30-minute concert, which will be streamed live on YouTube from 6pm on Friday May 8, will mark the first time the Royal Albert Hall has ever hosted a behind-closed-doors performance.

The event will support the Hall’s own fundraising appeal, as well as the Armed Forces charity SSAFA’s Emergency Response Fund.

“This concert will give the nation a moment to pay tribute to the fallen men and women of the Second World War and salute the country’s VE Day Veterans, many of whom are experiencing uncertainty and isolation,” the Royal Albert Hall said in a statement.

“It is also our opportunity to thank the Armed Forces who, alongside the NHS and many others, are coming together to serve the country.”

The concert will be “undertaken with strict measures put in place to specifically control social distancing and issues related to the COVID-19 pandemic,” the venue confirmed.

It follows Andrea Bocelli’s performance from an empty Duomo in Milan on Easter Sunday.
