Katherine Jenkins invites School Choir of the Year 2019 winners to sing with her in Belfast

The talented kids who won this year’s Junior School Choir Of The Year are to share a stage with star mezzo-soprano Katherine Jenkins.

Ebrington Primary School Choir raised the roof with four amazing performances in the BBC competition.

The Derry schoolchildren were so impressive, the UK’s best selling classical artist said she is “thrilled” the “talented” youngsters have agreed to sing with her at the Waterfront Hall later this month.

She said: “Having been a school teacher myself, it always brings such joy to my heart to see young children enthusiastic about singing.

“I have been aware of Ebrington Primary School’s talented choir since they won the BBC Northern Ireland School Choir of the Year and I’m thrilled that they have agreed to share their voices with my audience in my Belfast concert.”

Their proud principal Brian Guthrie said emotions ran high when he announced news of their upcoming gig with the global star.

Though, he has remained tight-lipped on what they are performing.

Mr Guthrie told the Mirror: “What an amazing opportunity it is for the children in the school.

“The music teacher and our choir conductor, Rachel Stone, is blown away. She has been a follower of Katherine Jenkins all through her career.

“It is just creating such a buzz around the school,” he added.

“It’s quite humbling and a huge honour.

“We brought the kids together to tell them the news whenever they came back after Easter. You could feel the emotion in the room with the adults as well as the kids. It really was incredible.”

Mr Guthrie said the song they are performing is “under wraps” but that the children “are practising hard”.

He also hopes they will get the chance to sing one of the four songs they performed at BBC School Choir of the Year, which has also landed them the opening and closing performance at the Walled City Tattoo.

Choirmaster Rachel Stone said “the children have been smiling from ear to ear” since their BC Northern Ireland School Choir of the Year 2019 win.

But she added: “To be asked to sing with Katherine Jenkins is most definitely the cherry on top!

“I asked the children how they feel about performing with such a successful and talented singer and they responded with: ‘This is truly a dream come true for all of us.’

“Thank you for giving us this amazing experience - Katherine will now be part of our #TeamEbrington.”
