Katherine Grainger will make her return to the Great Britain team at the European championships in Poznan on 29-31 May. Grainger will compete in the double sculls, the same event in which she won the Olympic gold in 2012, with a new partner, Vicky Thornley.
Grainger won the Olympic gold with Anna Watkins in 2012 and is coming back into the sport after more than two years on the sidelines.
Fifty rowers will travel for Team GB, with Helen Glover and Heather Stanning having the best chance of gold in the women’s pair. Great Britain topped the medal table in Belgrade last year, with golds in the men’s four and women’s pair.
Mohamed Sbihi, Alex Gregory and George Nash from the men’s four world championship boat, will compete in the men’s eight with the 2014 eights world champions Matt Gotrel, Paul Bennett, Peter Reed, Will Satch and the cox Phelan Hill. The crew is completed with the inclusion of the international senior debutant Stewart Innes.
Reilly O’Donnell, Tom Ransley, Alan Sinclair and Scott Durant will contest the men’s four, an event that Great Britain won at the last European championships.
James Foad and Matt Langridge, who took the world men’s pair silver in 2014, remain the specialist pair. They posted the fastest time by a British pair in winning that silver, overhauling the time set by James Cracknell and Sir Matt Pinsent in 2002.
