Katelyn Abeln and Emily Nothnagle named Ohio State team pistol captains

Katelyn Abeln and Emily Nothnagle have been named Ohio State team pistol captains for the 2020-2021 campaign according to a release from the university’s athletic department.

“The pistol team chose Emily Nothnagle and Katleyn Abeln after a multi-step process, culminating with a vote last week,” head coach Emil Milev said in a statement. “Emily was a captain last year, while Katelyn is new to this role. Both are determined to elevate the experience of each team member, provide support, and be the voice of the team. I’m looking forward to their leadership, community commitment, and team bond they will bring to The Ohio State pistol team this season.”

Nothnagle enters her second year as a captain as a redshirt junior. From Hershey, PA, she’s pulled in a slew of academic honors in her first three years. As a Big Ten Distinguished Scholar, she owns three top-20 finishes at the Intercollegiate Pistol Championships, including a 13th-place Sport Pistol showing in ’19. Her other two top-20 individual finishes helped elevate Ohio State to the 2018 national team title.

“I am honored to be voted a captain for such a fantastic team,” Nothnagle said. “As a captain, I intend to be a valuable resource to my teammates as we navigate this unusual season and continue our pursuit of excellence.”

As far as Abeln goes, she broke out as a freshman, winning First Team All-America accolades in Air Pistol, Standard Pistol and Women’s Sport Pistol last season. She also competed at the Olympic Trials — securing Team USA’s alternate position for both Women’s Sport and Air Pistol at the 2021 Tokyo Olympic Games. Abeln was also an OSU Scholar-Athlete as well.

“I am honored to one of our captains this year,” Abeln said. “I plan on motivating my teammates to work hard on and off the range while helping everyone maintain a positive attitude throughout the season.”
