Kate Wright's poignant nod to Rio Ferdinand's late wife by picking daughter Tia as maid of honour

Kate Wright honoured the memory of Rio Ferdinand 's late wife by choosing their daughter Tia as her maid of honour for their wedding.

The reality TV star was also joined by Rio's two sons who walked her down the aisle on their wedding day on Friday.

The pair jetted off to a lavish resort in Marmaris, Turkey where former Towie star Kate, 28, made the touching gesture to seven-year-old Tia.

It was a special moment for the youngster as Kate paid tribute to the football pundit's wife Rebecca, who died in May 2015 from cancer.

Rio opened up about the emotional moment to OK! magazine : "I cried as soon as the day started. Seeing Tia walk up the aisle before Kate set me off. It was just so emotional.

"There was just no going back on the emotion, that’s why I had to keep my shades on! Seeing Tate and Lorenz walk Kate down the aisle was particularly poignant and we wouldn’t have wanted to do it any other way.

"They were so proud and they couldn’t wait to do that, they felt important."

Rio, 40, became a single dad to Tia and her brothers Lorenz, 13, and Tate, 11, after Rebecca's death - but Kate has fully embraced her role as a stepmum to his kids.

She told OK! magazine : "I had two choices. I’m in this world with lots of drama and then I met Rio and the children, and, I thought, ‘I’m with these kids who have lost their mum. They don’t need a woman who is out all the time, they need someone at home with them.

"A really big part of our relationship and it working for the children is that we’ve included them in everything we’ve done."

Their love story began in 2017 after they met through mutual friends.

The pair took things slowly before Rio asked Kate to be his girlfriend when they were at a cafe with his children.

A happy Rio told OK! magazine : "I knew Kate was special from the moment I met her, it was pretty instant, but seeing her with the kids cemented everything, that was a huge part of it for me.

"So many pieces of the jigsaw have to click together for it to work and the wedding was the final piece."
