Everyone loves a throwback. When Reese Witherspoon tried on her Legally Blonde outfits a few years ago, 17 years after the film’s release, the internet exploded with screenshots, pink heart emojis (trés Elle Woods) and appreciative tweets.

Or, take last year’s Marvel Eternals premiere, where Angelina Jolie appeared side by side with her daughters Zahara and Shiloh, who were wearing two of Jolie’s old gowns — Zahara in her Oscar dress from 2014 and a Shiloh wearing an old Gabriela Hearst gown, reworked to fit its younger model.

Being an outfit repeater is in, and wasteful consumption is out — as demonstrated by Kate Winslet a last night’s Avatar 2: The Way of Water premiere. The actress rewore a dress almost as old as the first Avatar film. Well, not quite.

The sequel to Avatar finally premiered last night in Leicester Square, a whole thirteen years after its original iteration, and stars stepped out in all their finest garb to promote the long awaited follow up.

Including Winslet, who wore a black Badgley Mischka halter-neck gown which she originally donned for the Toronto International Film Festival premiere of her film The Dressmaker back in 2015. Winslet accessorised the gown, which features metallic embroidered details on the sides of the bust, with ribbed silver drop earrings and a tousled up-do.

The actress appeared to match with co-star Sigourney Weaver, who wore a black tailored suit by Alexander McQueen which also featured metallic detailling on the ribs, similar to that on Winslet’s dress.

Winslet plays “Ronal” in The Way of Water, her first acting role under Cameron’s directorial control since Titanic in 1997, where she said she was “absolutely terrified” of him.

She has since admitted that Cameron has calmed down a lot in the 25 years since they first worked together, telling The Telegraph: “I loved doing Avatar with Jim – he is much more calm now [...] In those days there was no space for him to say, ‘It might not work.’ He had to make it work. There were all those conversations about this huge film, Titanic. I can’t imagine the pressure. As we get older we learn how to say, ‘I made a mistake.’ We all get better at that, don’t we?”

Other stars walking the red carpet last night included Zoe Saldana, who shone in an Alexander McQueen sheer gown with floral bustier detailing, model Jourdan Dunn, Will.i.am, John Boyega, footballer Leah Williamson and the film’s male lead, Sam Worthington.

And even though the second Avatar film hasn’t reached our screens yet, Worthington has already confirmed that the third edition is “80-90 per cent” filmed and they’ve even filmed a couple of scenes for Avatar 4. Speaking on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, Sully said: “We did a few scenes because the kids were ageing out [...] There's five in the saga if we're lucky enough to get it.”

So, with another three Avatar premieres penciled into her calendar, we can wager that Winslet is probably going to ride the rewear train a couple more times. Time to place your bets on which gowns will be making a reapperance.
