Kate Winslet reveals 'biggest fear' for daughter Mia as they act together in new drama

Kate Winslet has revealed her 'biggest fear' as a mother as she takes on a new challenge with her 22-year-old daughter Mia Threapleton.

The actress, 47, will star alongside her daughter in Channel 4's female-led drama anthology series I Am Ruth, which will air later this year.

And it appears while Mia is following in Kate's footsteps, she is doing so off her own merit as casting directors have no idea who her famous mother is due to having her father, director Jim Threapleton's last name.

Now the pair will star in a fictional storyline for the two hour drama, which looks at the mental health crisis affecting young people in the UK, and was developed and co-authored by Kate and Dominic Savage.

Speaking about how people were unaware acting was in Mia's blood when she started auditioning, Kate told OK! : "I think I always suspected [she'd go into acting]. And then, sure enough, a couple of years ago, she turned around and said, 'I think I would like to give it a go.'

"What's been really great for her is that she has a different surname, so that initial job out of the gate, she slipped right under the radar, the people who cast her had absolutely no idea that she was my daughter. And, of course, that was my biggest fear and most important for her self-esteem."

Kate said she struggled playing a fictional mother-daughter role as it required her to give up her natural instincts in the role of Ruth to show a vulnerable side to Mia's character, Freya.

"It was really staggering how alarmingly free Mia and I were able to be, which I hadn't imagined, my instinct to take care of her had to go away because I knew I had to let her be exposed and hurting, and struggling, and that was quite difficult", she added.

Kate welcomed Mia with her first husband, director Jim Threapleton, who she was married to from 1998 to 2001.

She is also proud mum to sons Joe, 19, who she shares with ex husband Sam Mendes and Bear, nine, with husband Edward Abel Smith.

I Am Ruth follows two previous series of I Am films, with the first set starring Vicky McClure in I Am Nicola, Samantha Morton in I Am Kirsty, and Gemma Chan in I Am Hannah.

Series two saw Suranne Jones in I Am Victoria, Letitia Wright in I Am Danielle and Lesley Manville in I Am Maria.

Each of the films followed the experience of women in particularly raw, thought-provoking and personal moments.
