Kate Middleton won Queen over with special passion she inherited from parents

Impressing the in-laws is rarely an easy task, but imagine trying to win your boyfriend's granny over if she happens to be the Queen.

Kate Middleton had this tough task when she was dating Prince William, and we can't even imagine how daunting it must have been.

There have been some reports over the years that the Queen was slightly worried about her grandson's choice of girlfriend, with some claiming she had "grave concerns" over Kate.

However according to a royal expert there was one thing that helped the now Duchess of Cambridge win the Monarch over - her love for the outdoors.

Royal commentator Erin Hill told People magazine: "Growing up in the English countryside with a close-knit family, these are values that are really important to the Royal Family.

"The Queen loves the outdoors, she’s happiest when she’s wearing her tweeds out there, with her horses and this is something she shares with Kate.

"And William has longed for a close family since losing his mother when he was so young. Kate being very close to her parents, her siblings and William’s as well, it all comes together."

However royal expert Katie Nicholl believes it was a very different story in the lead up to the wedding.

The Queen  reportedly hadn't spent much time with Kate before wedding preparations began, and while she liked her grandson's partner, Katie claims she was worried that Kate didn't have an identity of her own before their engagement.

In her book  The Making of a Royal Romance , Katie writes: "Privately she had grave concerns and believed that Kate needed to have a job and an identity in her own right before an engagement was announced.”

There have also been reports that the Queen was worried about Kate's work ethic, and  claims the then 30-year-old wasn't doing enough .

Royal expert Phil Dampier, who has been reporting on the royals for more than 20 years, told  Express.co.uk  that Kate gradually started doing engagements because William was protective of her.

He said: "Kate was William's girlfriend for eight or nine years before they got engaged and got married.

"There was a phase where she appeared to be doing very little really.

"The Queen once remarked Kate doesn't do very much so I think she had a fairly long entrance to the  Royal family ."
