Kate Middleton stuns in velvet gown and Princess Diana's tiara at Buckingham Palace

Kate Middleton looked stunning in her late mother-in-law's tiara and some glitzy jewellery at the Queen's Diplomatic Reception on Wednesday night.

The Duchess of Cambridge paid tribute to Princess Diana by donning the Lover's Knot headware.

The tiara, which is 105 years old, was given to the Princess of Wales as a wedding gift in 1981 and Kate has worn it on a number of occasions after it was passed down to her.

The dazzling piece of jewellery was on show at Buckingham Palace where members of the royal family were celebrating the annual white tie reception for the Diplomatic Corps.

For one day every December the country's diplomats and foreign ambassadors based in the UK are invited to the Queen's house for a reception.

As well as the tiara, mother-of-three Kate wore a Nizam of Hyderabad necklace.

The jewel encrusted item comes from the Queen's personal collection.

The 37-year-old royal also wore the Dame Grand Cross of the Royal Victorian Order, which is a rank equivalent to a knight.

He wore a coat and tails along with a white bow tie.

Prince Charles and Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, also dressed up for the occasion.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle , were not at the Palace.

They are currently on a six week break from royal engagements and did not attend President Donald Trump's meeting with the Queen last week.

In other royal news, it was reported today that the Queen gives a staggering 620 gifts to family and friends each Christmas.

She also writes and sends 750 Christmas cards to people around the world.
