Kate Middleton's nod to Diana in her first royal engagement as Princess of Wales

Kate Middleton channelled the late Princess Diana during her first royal engagement as the new Princess of Wales.

Now that the royal mourning period has come to an end, Kate was spotted wearing a long-red coat as she and husband Prince William visited Wales. The national period of mourning ended the day after the Queen 's funeral, but the royal family continued mourning until Monday 27 November, and during that time royals could only wear black.

During the Prince and Princess of Wales first engagement since the mourning period ended, Kate looked stunning in a long red coat a fitting nod to Diana during her Welsh trip. William wore a blue two-piece suit - a lighter shade to that the royal has been seen in of late, reports OK! Magazine.

William and Kate spent the day travelling the length of Wales, first visiting Holyhead in Anglesey, North Wales, and then travelling to Swansea in South West Wales. The royal couple had promised to visit at the earliest opportunity following the death of the Queen, and return hoping to begin “deepening the trust and respect” they have with the people of Wales.

In a bid to continue the monarchy’s relationship with the Welsh population, King Charles III said the country had “a special place in [the Queen’s] heart” before her passing upon his own recent trip to Wales.

The new Prince and Princess of Wales resided in Wales for three years between 2010 and 2013, where they lived Anglesey, an island on the northwest coast of Wales. Prince William was a helicopter pilot for the RAF at the time, and had been stationed in Wales to undergo training to fly the Sea King search and rescue helicopter.

Having completed his training, the couple moved into a gorgeous – but humble to the couple's standards – farmhouse in the hamlet of Bodorgan. William and Kate rented Bordogan Hall, the largest property in Bodorgan, from Lord and Lady Meyrick, for around £750 a month. The couple described their time there as "immensely special", The Express reports.

William previously said of Anglesey: "This island has been our first home together, and it will always be an immensely special place for us both."i

The last official visit the pair made to Wales was as Duke and Duchess of Cambridge to Cardiff Castle in June, where rehearsals for the Platinum Jubilee concert were taking place.
