Kate Middleton keeps eight-year-old boy company on train whilst his dad is in the toilet

A journalist has shared an unexpected yet heartwarming interaction which happened between his child and the Duchess of Cambridge. Matthew Syed, who is a columnist for The Times, was travelling to the Commonwealth Games on Tuesday (August 2) via train when he realised he needed the toilet.

Mr Syed was on his way to the Commonwealth Table Tennis Championships - where he had won gold many years before - with his eight-year-old son, Ted. Ted waited outside the door as Mr Syed used the toilet, and it was then that the dad heard his son speaking to a woman.

Mr Syed heard the woman say to Ted: "Are you here alone?"

Pointing to the bathroom on the train, Ted replied: "No, my dad is in there."

Whilst Mr Syed was in the bathroom, he said he could hear his son having 'a whale of a time' with the unknown woman the other side of the door. Once he was finished, Mr Syed left the bathroom and turned to the lady to thank her for keeping his son company, but 'stopped in his tracks' when he realised it was Kate Middleton.

He wrote in his column for The Times: "Here is the Duchess of Cambridge, chatting merrily with my son."

As Mr Syed and Ted said goodbye to the Duchess of Cambridge, who was travelling via train to the Commonwealth Games without security or guards whilst the Duke of Cambridge and Princess Charlotte made a grand entrance via helicopter, Mr Syed turned to his son and asked: "Did you realise who that was, son?"

“No idea but she was really nice,” he responded.

The heartwarming occasion was such a surprise to Syed, that he ended up sharing it with his Twitter followers. He penned: "I was using the loo on train to Comm Games yesterday while my young son waited outside.

"He got talking to a lady waiting her turn. They chatted, laughed.

"I came out to thank her - then almost fell over. It was Kate! Thank you ⁦⁦@KensingtonRoyal"

After Prince George was treated to his first ever Wimbledon last month, Princess Charlotte was taken to the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham earlier this week by her parents, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. The seven-year-old wore her hair in plaits and had a striped dress on, complete with a Peter Pan collar, as she pulled funny faces in the crowd.
