Kate Middleton in hysterics as student jokes about mum 'bribing her with pizza'

Kate Middleton burst into laughter when the daughter of a finalist in her photography project described how her mum "bribed me with pizza" so she would pose for her.

The Duchess of Cambridge spoke to Niaz Maleknia over the phone about her portrait 'Cancelled', which was among the 100 selected as part of the 'Hold Still' National Portrait Gallery exhibition spearheaded by the Cambridges.

Kate, 39, talked to Niaz and her daughter Romy - the subject of her mum's photograph - about their photography ambitions and how youngsters have been coping during the pandemic.

In the call, the second of a series with some of the exhibition's participants, the Duchess can be heard cracking up when Romy tells her that her mum once went all the way to bribing her with pizza to get her to pose.

Kate, whose calls have been posted on YouTube, can be heard asking Romy if her mum takes a lot of pictures of her or if the entry was a one-off.

Romy, who has just completed her A-levels and has now gotten an unconditional offer for Stanford University, replied saying: "Yea she takes a lot of photographs all the time to the point that sometimes it does get really..."

A picture of Romy sitting on a bench in a park with a pizza box in her hand then appears, at which point Romy intervenes to say: "Actually I think I was in a really bad mood one day, she actually had to bribe me with pizza".

The calls are part of the Middleton's initiatives to mark Mental Health Week, which runs from May 10-16.

The Duchess asked Romy what finishing her A-levels was like as the pandemic stripped graduates of a chance to have a proper ceremony.

She replied saying they had a virtual graduation, which was "very strange".

Kate, who for years has campaigned alongside Prince William to raise awareness about mental health, also asked how young people's mental health has been affected by the pandemic.

Romy said it "hasn't been great" but was pleased to see that people "have become more open about it" as it is "natural" to struggle in such circumstances.

The Duchess agreed as she said: "Absolutely, everyone has sort of experienced something together in a way so there is no shame in talking about it and that's what we've been really keen to do, it's break that stigma and start those conversations around mental health.

"It's great to hear people are being a lot more open about it."
