Kate Middleton broke strict royal food rule Queen has followed for 70 years

The royal family have so many rules and protocol to follow, from strict dress codes to how to act in public, that must be hard to keep track.

But it appears the Duchess of Cambridge has broken the Queen's golden dinner rule - and she may end up regretting it.

It is believed that for the entirety of her 70-year reign, the Queen has never disclosed her favourite food outside of palace walls. In fact, even some of her own chefs don't know.

Royal insiders have previously revealed that she keeps her food preferences private as it stops her from being served the same dishes at every official engagement.

Gordon Rayner, a former royal correspondent for The Telegraph, once said he’d discovered this fact from a royal staff member.

"As one of her staff told me, ‘If she said she had a favourite meal she would never get served anything else," he said.

But back in 2018, Kate broke this tradition on an official visit to Great Ormond Street Hospital, where she chatted with four-year-old Rafael Chana, who was in the hospital waiting for a heart transplant about her family.

When talk turned to food, Rafael told Kate that he enjoyed olives, and she replied she loved them as a child too.

"I used to eat lots and lots of olives when I was little as well," Kate revealed.

They also talked about their love of pasta, with Kate saying that her own daughter, Charlotte, likes pasta too.

Royal correspondent Rebecca English later posted on Twitter : "The Duchess of Cambridge revealed today that her daughter, Princess Charlotte, loves olives and she encourages both her and Prince George to cook with her."

For the Queen, while her favourite food remains a secret to this day, a former royal chef has revealed that she loves chocolate cake.

Former royal chef and author of Eating Royally Darren McGrady told baking website RecipePlus: "The Chocolate Biscuit Cake is the only cake that goes back again and again and again every day until it's all gone.

"She'll take a small slice every day until eventually there is only one tiny piece, but you have to send that up, she wants to finish the whole of that cake."
