Kate Middleton and Prince William's nods to Charles and Diana's wedding on their big day

It's 40 years since Prince William's parents Prince Charles and Princess Diana wed in a huge ceremony at St Paul's Cathedral.

Their fairytale wedding was watched by millions around the world with Diana glowing in her beautiful ivory gown.

Thirty years later in 2011, it was William's turn to tie the knot with the Duchess of Cambridge.

Sadly, his mother wasn't there to see him wed after her tragic death in 1997, but Prince Charles and the Queen were there on his big day.

The main difference between the ceremonies was that while Charles and Diana held theirs at St Paul's, William and Kate married at Westminster Abbey.

But despite the differences, the young royals had several sweet nods and similarities to Charles and Diana's wedding on their big day...

The engagement ring

Although strictly before the wedding, there is one big similarity shared between Kate and Diana - their engagement ring.

The ring features a 12-carat oval blue sapphire and surrounded by fourteen solitaire diamonds and is set in 18K white gold.

It's believed Diana picked it herself after being presented with a selection to choose from by her fiancee Prince Charles.

After her untimely death in 1997, Charles allowed William and Prince Harry to select pieces from her jewellery collection to keep.

It's believed the sapphire ring went to Harry, while William chose a gold Cartier watch.

But in Amazon Prime show The Diana Story, the princess' former butler Paul Burrell explained that shortly before William proposed to his now-wife Kate in 2010, Harry offered his brother the chance to give his bride-to-be their mother's ring.

Bows in the dress

Both Kate and Diana wore gorgeous, but very different wedding dresses on their big days.

Diana's ivory silk and taffeta gown was designed by David and Elizabeth Emmanuel and featured a huge 25ft train.

Kate opted for Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen to design her dress, which had a satin bodice and floral motifs made from lace.

But one similarity is that they both had a small blue bow sewn into their gowns for good luck. In addition, they both also had antique lace incorporated into their dresses as their 'something old', reports Vanity Fair.

Earrings from parents

When it came to the jewellery the brides opted for different tiaras.

Diana wore the Spencer family tiara while Kate teamed her dress with the 1936 Cartier halo tiara that she borrowed from the Queen.

But one similarity is that they both wore earrings that were from their parents for the wedding days.

Diana's belonged to her mother Frances Shand Kydd and consisted of more than 50 diamonds.

Similarly, Kate's were a gift from her parents Carole and Michael Middleton and comprised of diamond-set stylised oak leaves with a pear-shaped diamond set-drop and a pavé-set diamond acorn in the centre.

Processional music

After officially being declared husband and wife Diana and Charles set off up the long aisle of St Paul's.

And as the dignitaries, including the Queen, followed behind, William Walton’s orchestral march Crown Imperial rang out in the cathedral.

Fast-forward 30 years later, the same piece of music played as Kate and William walked out of Westminster Abbey as newlyweds.

Carriage ride

No royal wedding would be complete without a carriage ride - so it's no surprise that both couples travelled back to Buckingham Palace this way.

And the actual carriage that they both used was the same - the open-top 1902 State Landau carriage.

Buckingham Palace balcony kiss

It has become something of a tradition for royal newlyweds who marry in London to make an appearance on the Buckingham Palace balcony.

And when Charles and Diana made their appearance in 1981, they treated the huge crowds to a kiss.

Similarly, William and Kate also kissed on during their balcony appearance - not once, but twice!
