Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle channel old school glamour at the Commonwealth Day Service

Meghan Markle and Kate Middleton brought a touch of old-school glamour to Westminster Abbey on Monday as they attended the Commonwealth Service alongside other members of the royal family.

The young duchesses joined their husbands, The Queen, Prince Charles and Camilla and Prince Andrew to celebrate the 53 countries in the commonwealth alongside a 2000-strong congregation.

The Duchess of Cambridge cut a striking figure in a pillar-box red Catherine Walker coat with large gold buttons lining the front which she had last worn for her arrival in New Zealand in 2014.

For its second outing, Kate chose to pair the red coatdress with a neutral suede clutch and pumps by Emmy London, and her hair styled in her classic chignon.

The look was decidedly more exciting than her outfit last year, when she wore a very simple navy blue Beulah coat with a matching Lock & Co. hat and suede Rupert Sanderson pumps for the annual celebration.

Meghan's look meanwhile was feminine and soft. She opted for a floaty chain-link print cream midi dress from Victoria Beckham (£1221) and a cream boucle dress coat. She re-wore her Dean Davidson 'Midi Knockout' Earrings and finished the look with a pair of teal satin pointy courts and a matching clutch, both of which picked out the colour of the print on her dress. When it came to headgear, Meghan channelled Jackie Kennedy in a 1960s-style cream pillbox hat.

This was Meghan’s second high gloss outfit of the day. Just hours earlier she attended a Commonwealth Day celebration at Canada House wearing a bottle green coat by Canadian-born designer Erdem.

The royal family steps out every year to attend the service, but 2019 is particularly significant as it marks the 70th anniversary of the modern Commonwealth.
