Kate Middleton and Beatrice's sweet nod to Diana and Fergie as royals enjoy Ascot

Kate Middleton and Beatrice had a sweet not to Princess Diana and Fergie in their outfits at Royal Ascot today.

The two princesses joined racegoers when they took part in the traditional carriage procession along with Prince William, and the King and Queen.

William and Kate made their first appearance of the week at the famous Berkshire meet, where high fashion rubs shoulders with the racing world.

Travelling in the second carriage together along with Beatrice, Kate wore a red dress by Alexander McQueen and a Philip Treacy hat while William, like the other royal men, looked smart in a morning suit, and top hat.

But the two royals had a sweet nod to two outfits that Diana and Fergie wore back in 1990 to the same event.

The outfits mirrored those worn almost 33 years ago.Pictured along with the the late Queen Mother and the then Prince Charles, Diana wore a striking red jacket on first day of Royal Ascot in an open carriage on June 19, 1990, along with a purple skirt - similar to what Kate wore today.

Fergie could be seen in a full red dress and similar red and pink hate - as today Beatrice wore an intricate light coloured dress.

Just as Fergie and Diana arrived together for the first day of the 1990 event, Beatrice and Kate did today.

The two matched in their striking red outfits.

During the procession, William and Kate could be seen talking as they travelled with Beatrice and her husband Edo.

Then in the third carriage was the Duchess of Edinburgh, Earl of Caledon, and the Prince and Princess of Kent.

Dame Judi Dench was in the fourth carriage, joined by Mr David Mills, and Mr and Mrs Williams Farish.

They were spotted on Thursday with eldest son Prince George at William's former school Eton College, prompting speculation the young royal, who turns 10 next month, will follow in the footsteps of his father.

William and Kate were guests of the late Queen a number of times at Royal Ascot, a racecourse the monarch had a great affinity with and where she had more than 20 winners.

Charles and Camilla appeared ecstatic when their thoroughbred Desert Hero, an 18-1 longshot, won the King George V Stakes on Thursday - their first Royal Ascot win - and they have another chance of victory when Candle of Hope rides later in the Sandringham Stakes.

They were joined in the carriage procession by actress Dame Judi Dench, the Duchess of Edinburgh and Princess Beatrice and her husband Edo Mapelli Mozzi.
