Duchess of Cambridge launches new garden to encourage families to get back to nature

The Duchess of Cambridge met the queen of cakes as launched her final garden of the summer season aimed at supporting the health and well-being of children.

Kate took a tractor ride with Mary Berry and some children at festival at RHS Garden Wisley in Surrey, as she formally opened a “Back To Nature” garden inspired by the design she showed off at the Chelsea Flower Show .

The new garden has many features of her Chelsea design, which she showed off in May, such as a waterfall, dens and hollow log.

But it has even more child-friendly features, including two connected treehouses and slides.

She said: “I believe spending time outdoors when we are young can play a role in laying the foundations for children to become happy, healthy adults.”

Kate, a keen gardener, got her children George, Charlotte and Louis involved in her Chelsea Flower Show garden in May.

Prince George gave her design a score of “20” when asked by his father the Duke of Cambridge what he thought of it.

The new garden, which has a permanent home at Wisley, aims to highlight the benefits of the outdoors and inspire children, families and communities to spend more time enjoying nature

Kate said about her garden: "In recent years I have focussed much of my work on the early years, and how instrumental they are for outcomes later in life.

Through her Back to Nature gardens, she has aimed to highlight how spending time outdoors can enrich a child’s early development.
