Kate Hoey: Ardent Brexiteer to step down as Labour MP

Labour's most ardent Brexiteer has announced she will stand down as an MP at the next election.

Kate Hoey, who has been MP for Vauxhall since 1989, has angered local members by her anti-EU stance.

In a letter announcing her retirement she said: "I will carry on until a general election serving with the energy, honesty and integrity that I have tried to bring to public service my whole life."

Labour gave all its sitting MPs until today to indicate whether or not they wanted to continue in the role.

Ms Hoey, who famously campaigned alongside Nigel Farage in favour of leaving the EU, had previously said she would not fight the 2020 election but when the 2017 snap poll was called she was persuaded to stay on.

It comes almost a year after she lost a no confidence motion tabled by her Vauxhall Constituency Labour Party.

Those who attended the meeting last July voted unanimously for a call to oust her last night in a damning motion that accused her of "ignoring" constituents' views, "collaborating" with Hard Brexit Tories and "colluding with Nigel Farage".

It is not just her stance on Brexit that meant the former minister often clashed with her local members.

Despite representing one of the most inner city seats she is a former chair of the Countryside Alliance and is in favour of fox hunting.

She attacked Labour's decision to ban handguns following the Dunblane massacre.

She is also in favour of grammar schools which puts her at odds with lots of Labour Party members.

Her resignation will fuel speculation about who could be selected to replace her in the safe seat.

Despite spouting views which are at odds with the majority of her constituents, Ms Hoey held the seat in 2017 with 57% of the vote.

Ms Hoey said specifically that she would not stand for the Labour Party at the next election fuelling speculation that she could defect to Nigel Farage's Brexit Party.

Responding to the announcement pro-Corbyn campaign group Momentum said: "Kate Hoey is a no deal supporting, anti gay rights, fox hunting advocate who shared a platform with Nigel Farage.

"She couldn’t be more out of step with her Vauxhall constituents, and we look forward to backing a Corbyn supporting, socialist candidate in an open selection."

In her letter she thanked Ms Hoey thanked staff and the local community who she had worked with over her 30 years as an MP.

She said: "I am profoundly grateful to those Party Members, local residents, community groups and trade unions with whom I have worked and campaigned over so many years."

Kate Hoey's resignation letter in full:

To all my constituents,

Having stated at the 2015 General Election that I would not seek re-election in 2020 I was persuaded to fight the unexpected General Election of 2017.

Now that the national Labour Party has started the process for the 2022 election I have decided that after 30 years as the MP for Vauxhall I will not seek re-election as a Labour candidate.

Until the next General Election I will of course continue every single day to give my all to help constituents in Vauxhall and to campaign for policies that make life better for residents.

I will carry on until a General Election serving with the energy, honesty and integrity that I have tiled to bong to public service my whole life.

It remains a huge privilege to serve this special pert of London. I have had wonderful staff over the years some with me for over 20 years and I thank them all for their personal support.

I am profoundly grateful to those Party Members, local residents, community groups and trade unions with whom I have worked and campaigned over so many years.
