Kate Garraway wants to show mask flouter Stanley Johnson a photo of Derek after Covid-19

Kate Garraway has admitted that she has been left frustrated by those flouting the rules and ditching masks in shops, despite potentially receiving a £200 fine by doing so.

The Good Morning Britain host said that she was keen to show flouters, like Stanley Johnson, a photo of her husband Derek Draper in hospital after contracting Covid-19.

Yesterday, the Daily Mirror pictured the prime minister's dad brazenly wandering around the newsagent without a mask on.

Reacting to those flouting the rules, Kate admitted that while she felt sympathy for those who were fed up, she wanted them to realise the gravity of the situation.

Derek was hospitalised with coronavirus early this year and has not been able to leave hospital, despite waking from a coma in July.

"I have huge sympathy with people who are fed up with it. I think if you haven't been directly touched by it, you haven't seen the devastation, but your life has been devastated – your livelihood, your ability to feel a sense of joy – then, of course, I think you're going to get frustrated.

"But, you know, it does make me tempted to show a picture of Derek in his current state, and say 'You don't want this in your life'. And you don't know who it will affect and how, so, you know, stick to [the rules]."

Kate also revealed that Derek's parents still hadn't been able to visit him in hospital.

"Derek's mum and dad haven't been able to see Derek," she said. "And I think if they can go six months without giving a hug to their son, who's so desperately ill, then the rest of us can probably get through."

"His mum and dad haven't seen Derek and if they can last six months I think other people can too."

Meanwhile, Dr Hilary Jones warned that the UK was following the same pattern as France in terms of coronavirus cases, which he branded "concerning".

"Social distancing is the thing that keeps us safe," he said. "We've seen two shining examples of people who don't think the rules apply to them.

"We're following the curve of France, which is concerning."

He added: "I haven't been able to see my kids but I'm trying to be sensible."
