Kate Garraway updates GMB viewers on husband Derek after 'lots of tests'
Kate Garraway has given a fresh update on her husband Derek Draper after 'lots of tests'.
The TV presenter was back on Good Morning Britain on Wednesday, almost a week after she won a National Television Award for her documentary on Derek's recovery.
Former political adviser Derek spent more than a year in hospital after coronavirus "wreaked havoc" on his body.
He suffered serious complications, including brain inflammation as well as damage to his lungs, heart, kidneys and liver.
Derek, also 54, returned to the family home in April where he now requires round-the clock care.
But during Wednesday's GMB, Kate, 54, gave viewers positive update on her husband’s condition, saying he "understands everything."
"His eyes lit up," she said. "We are very clear now that he does understand everything really, and understands everything that I tell him about.
"He can’t respond still and communicate, and Derek’s been having lots more tests of things. We went to hospital a few weeks ago, (which was) the first time he’d seen medics outside of the home."
She then explained what the tests involved following his long battle with the virus.
"(They) asked him to hold his breath and release his breath, he asked absolutely everything they asked of him,” Kate said.
"Also just reactions to things and reactions to the children, his responses are appropriate. It does really feel that way as if he is reacting," she added.
Kate also once again thanked everyone for their support, not just for her and Derek but the couple's two children, Darcey, 15, and Billy, 12.
She also opened up about what it is like reporting on the pandemic as well as living through the reality of the impact of coronavirus.
"I think it's reflecting on that double thing of living with it and reporting on it," she said.
"I think coming in here and the support from all of you has been amazing. I think its been very helpful when talking to political (figures) and talking to people who have been affected in all different ways.
"Not necessarily an asset I would have wanted to have."
During the NTAs last week, the audience of famous faces from the small screen stood to applaud a visibly emotional Kate after she was announced as the winner of the factual gong.
Kate finished her speech with a dedication to her husband.
"Most of all Derek, who should be here who tell his story. Derek, you’re gonna get the chance. Believe.
"The hope is real. Thank you so much."
